Sundtek MediaTV Digital Home doesn't work
« am: Juli 26, 2011, 02:37:10 Nachmittag »
I have recently bought a Sundtek MediaTV Digital Home usb tv tuner. I can't get it to work properly. Hopefully it is not DOA product. Perhaps someone here can help me fix it.

Some facts:
OS: Ubuntu 11.04
Driver: http://www.sundtek.de/media/sundtek_installer_110414.0139.sh
Location: Netherlands
Stick inserted into USB3 port (the laptop on which I am testing only has usb3)

After installation of the drivers:
ronald@XPS:~/Downloads$ /opt/bin/mediaclient -e
**** List of Media Hardware Devices ****
device 0: [Sundtek MediaTV Digital Home]  DVB-C, DVB-T, REMOTE-CONTROL
  [SERIAL]:
     ID: ODVBTB
  [DVB-C]:
     FRONTEND: /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
     DVR: /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0
     DMX: /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0
  [DVB-T]:
     FRONTEND: /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
     DVR: /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0
     DMX: /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0
  [REMOTECONTROL]:
     INPUT0: /dev/mediainput0

Since DVB-T seemed easier to test I started by trying that first. Of course I had set the correct DVB mode first. Kaffeine looked like the easiest to use product for testing, but it didn't show any channels. Next try: scanning for channels based on a predefined list for dvb-t in NL. There is only one frequency I can receive without a smartcard, so I only left this line in the file with transponders. This gave me this result:
start_filter:1361: ERROR: ioctl DMX_SET_FILTER failed: 11 Resource temporarily unavailable
start_filter:1361: ERROR: ioctl DMX_SET_FILTER failed: 11 Resource temporarily unavailable
start_filter:1361: ERROR: ioctl DMX_SET_FILTER failed: 11 Resource temporarily unavailable

I'll only use DVB-C anyway, so I quit trying to fix the simple test case. DVB-C it is. Next test. I set the mode to DVB-C and tried scanning again using the correct transponder list for NL. Again:
ronald@XPS:~/Downloads$ scan /usr/share/dvb/dvb-c/nl-Ziggo
scanning /usr/share/dvb/dvb-c/nl-Ziggo
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
initial transponder 372000000 6875000 0 3
initial transponder 514000000 6875000 0 3
initial transponder 356000000 6875000 0 3
initial transponder 369000000 6875000 0 3
>>> tune to: 372000000:INVERSION_AUTO:6875000:FEC_NONE:QAM_64
start_filter:1361: ERROR: ioctl DMX_SET_FILTER failed: 11 Resource temporarily unavailable
start_filter:1361: ERROR: ioctl DMX_SET_FILTER failed: 11 Resource temporarily unavailable
start_filter:1361: ERROR: ioctl DMX_SET_FILTER failed: 11 Resource temporarily unavailable

I was starting to get a bit worried now... Another try: Tvheadend. At least Tvheadend recognized the tv tuner and suddenly a blue light showed up on the tuner. Until now there had been no sign of life on the tuner. Some hope returned... Unfortunately, I'm getting a similar result in Tvheadend when scanning for muxes. It should have found a lot more muxes and as a result a lot of services/channels. The network id is correct. Some screenshots:

Ok, anyone who can tell me where to look for errors? Some idea on how to fix this? Or do I have a product that, unfortunately, was broken from the start?

Can you test the stick on another PC and/or Windows?

You should also check /var/log/mediasrv.log

We strongly believe that you seem to have some USB compatibility issues with your system.
Also check your BIOS if you can adjust some USB settings.

We have seen those issues in the past with several USB 3.0 based systems, those issues are usually related to the USB host controller driver.
With USB 2.0 based systems if those issues came up customers were always able to modify USB settings in the bios - however we only had that feedback from one or two other customers with USB 3.0 and don't know if there are any bios settings available.
Failure is a good thing! I'll fix it

Thanks for the quick reply. The usb3 port was a main candidate. First, I'll have a look at the bios to see if I can make the usb ports act as usb2 ports. Fortunately, I use my laptop only as a test environment, there will be normal usb ports on the machine that will be using the tuner. If that is not possible I'll give it a try on the same laptop in Windows and if it still does not work on another pc. If it works in Windows I'm confident it should also work in Linux. I'll post back the results.

It's most likely that you have to modify Bios configurations and/or use the latest Linux kernel for the latest USB Host controller support.

No usb options in the bios.

This is a small part of /var/log/mediasrv.log:
2011-07-25 23:11:51 [946] Channel found (372000000)
2011-07-25 23:11:51 [946] =============

2011-07-25 23:11:52 [946] Error enabling USB transfer
2011-07-25 23:11:52 [946] Submitting 4 failed
So, indeed, a usb issue.

The kernel version is 2.6.38.

Ah well, off to windows it is...

The installation procedure on windows was not as described in the installation topic, but after running the setup and restarting I could set up Media Center and watch some free to air dvb-t channels!

At least I know the tuner works. Now I have to wait till the last parts of my new nas / media server arrive and hopefully it will run at once on a normal usb port :)

Thanks for the offer, but first I'll wait until I have assembled my new server. Since it has regular usb ports I think it will be ok. If not, I know where to contact you :)

In case anyone comes here and is looking for a solution, I managed to get everything working on my nas (on a normal usb port). Installing and configuring tvheadend with this tuner was relatively easy. Just make sure you load the drivers before tvheadend :)

I used ubuntu server 11.04 x64 as OS and I'm able to make recordings using the web interface of tvheadend and view streams in VLC.

@Sundtek Support:

I have the same problem. The stick worked without problems under Kernel 2.6.x. Now with Kernel 3.2.x (Ubuntu 12.04) I get the same error messages:

2012-06-12 01:57:53 [4685] Bandwidth: 8 MHz

2012-06-12 01:57:53 [4685] ERROR: Cannot allocate memory
2012-06-12 01:57:53 [4685] Error enabling USB transfer

Did you created a bug report already?

My Terratec DVB-T stick works without problems on my system after compiling the needed driver for it.

[Edited 20120612 21:44]:

I plug the Sundtek into a USB 2.0 (not 3.0!) port in my HP Elitebook.

Try to switch it to Bulk

Zitat
/opt/bin/mediaclient --dtvtransfermode=bulk -d /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0

take care that you pick the correct device node (as indicated with /opt/bin/mediaclient -e)

afterwards replug the device, the option is persistent it will be stored on the stick

Since it worked for 2.6 for you there seems to be some problem with the linux kernel and your usb controller not with our driver actually.
We are also using it with 3.2 here without any problem.

The bulk option requires less memory so it might help in your case.

I have the same problem in Ubuntu 12.04 when using a USB3.0 port, if I use a USB2.0 it works. Using latest Ubuntu 12.04 (3.2.0-27-generic) kernel and latest Sundtek Linux driver (20th July 2012). Any clue?

Regards,

There have been many usb stack changes in linux between 3.0 and 3.4. We will add some more debugging information to the next driver release which then can be forwarded to the linux usb mailinglist. Obviously it has nothing to do with our driver (it will still have full support also for USB 3.0 ports) however the linux usb 3.0 support is not very mature with Linux 3.2

Did you change the transfer Mode to bulk, like indicated in the previous post? (after that you need to replug the device).
